Stress Management:
Have you been feeling stressed out lately? Do you have too many things on your plate? Do you feel tense? Is stress impacting your sleep, work, relationships or health? Stress, is commonly experienced when the demands on us outweigh our resources for coping. Stress can cause us to feel overwhelmed, off balance and essentially pulled in every direction.
Common physical signs of stress:
- Cognitive: Difficulty making decisions, poor concentration, confusion
- Physical: Headache, sleep disturbance, upset stomach, muscle tension, decreased sex drive
- Emotional: depression, anxiety, irritability, hostility
- Behavioral: withdrawal from others, interpersonal conflicts, increased substance use, crying, working harder but getting less done
Prolonged stress can lead to burnout.
Symptoms of burnout include:
- Extreme exhaustion
- Loss of motivation and low productivity
- Depression
- Thoughts of suicide
- Despair- feeling trapped and/or defeated
- Decreased satisfaction
- Anxiety
- Health problems such as hypertension, headache
- Insomnia
- Feeling alone
- Cynicism
